Looking for a book that will melt your heart, get you hot and bothered, and have you shedding a tear or two (or like a few hundred) then you must, Must, MUST read The Edge of Never! Author J.A. Redmerski takes you on a journey (literally the characters are on a bus) with this riveting and emotional book. I couldn’t get enough of Camryn and Andrew!
The story begins when Camryn and her Natalie her BFF go out to a club with Nat’s boyfriend Damon . Natalie is concerned about Camryn because Cam has had it rough the past couple of years (family issues, boyfriend issues, loved ones lost forever). The club scene truly isn’t Camryn’s scene and so she goes and sits down at the bar where she soon begins to chat with the bartender and eventually they go and talk up on the roof. Unbeknown to her Damon follows them up and precedes to beat the shit out of the bartender. Camryn is pissed because nothing was happening (except some good ole conversation) but Damon decided to take matters into his own hands. After the bartender leaves Damon and Camryn have a heated conversation that ends up with Camryn running from the bar. The next day she must tell Natalie what went down and let’s just say there were other reasons why Damon went ape shit on the bartender and Natalie blames Camryn.
This night just adds to the pile of emotional shit on Camryn’s plate and she decides to follow her gut and she hops onboard a bus to Idaho (Idaho, you say? Why yes the potatoes are awesome there!) So she’s on the bus and who does she eventually meet up with–Andrew. They hit it off right away (well they not only hit it off but they both secretly feel this connection to one another) and find out they are sharing a bus all the way to Wyoming. Andrew is going to say goodbye to his dying dad.
With nothing else to do on a bus they talk and talk and talk about everything and anything but neither ever really reveals why they are sitting on this bus in the first place. They both have their reasons but they aren’t willing to share–and let me tell you Andrew’s reasons are a heartbreaking. (keep those tissues handy). Before you know it they are in Wyoming and must go their separate ways (don’t go Andrew!!!!).
Camryn’s bus is delayed and so she decides to change her course and take a bus to Texas but she never gets on that bus–I won’t tell you why but Andrew’s back (yeah!!!!!). My hero! The road trip continues (after a bit of a pause because Andrew must face some things) but now they are riding in a car. Things get goooood now!! (wink, wink) Heading to nowhere in particular they just get in the car and go. More talking, more of other things (get a fan people to cool you down), Camryn comes clean with why she is on this journey but Andrew stays quiet. What are you hiding??? I will tell you now I had some ideas floating in my head and everyone of them were wrong! You won’t see this coming!!
The road trip is awesome and you will be captivated by the story but they eventually make it to Texas (where Andrew lives) and the trip must end but the secret is revealed–CRAP!!! When I found out I yelled at my iPad and had to walk away to calm down. When I returned I did it only because I had to know where this was going and WHY, WHY, WHY was this happening!!
Here are some of my favorite quotes and excerpts from the book:
“Depression is pain in its purest form and I would do anything to be able to feel an emotion again. Any emotion at all. Pain hurts, but pain that’s so powerful that you can’t feel anything anymore, that’s when you start to feel like you’re going crazy”
“So this road trip is a date then?” “What?” I laugh. “No! It was just an analogy.”
“Well, number one: my car, my stereo; I’m sure I don’t need to elaborate on that.”
“Number two,” he says holding up two fingers and dismissing my argument altogether. “You have to do whatever I say.”
“Just because one person’s problem is less traumatic than another’s doesn’t mean they’re required to hurt less.”
“If you were to let me fuck you, you would have to let me own you.”
“You have to tell me what you want, Camryn.” He licks my belly once so slowly that my skin ripples with shivers. “You won’t get it unless you tell me and make me believe you.”
“It’s better to shun emotion than to fall for it and let it make you its bitch–and since nothing lasts forever, in the end everything that was once good, always hurts like hell.”
So after the “secret is revealed” things move quickly and soon I am–once again–doing the “ugly cry” (what is with the books I am reading lately). It was so bad I had a family member came to check on me because they thought something was seriously wrong–nothing wrong except my world has metaphorically crumbled around me.
Now, the beginning is a bit slow but stay with it! After a bit you will see the author sets things up nicely–you really need the background she provides to understand Camryn. This book will not disappoint you and you will NOT want it to end. More? Yes, please. Unfortunately, currently there is no plans for a second book (according to the author’s FAQs page on her website). We can hope though, right?
